How to rate a comedy?

A movie like 'Waiting...' or 'Goon', there isn't really a whole lot of story behind it and that's ok because it isn't meant to... however they are hilarious. Since I think of the enjoyment factor as my overall feel on the movie, I then think of Story for comedies as a mixture of story, writing, jokes and overall how funny it was when I score it.

How do you guys do it?

I think that Story and Characters are the hardest metrics to measure. That being said, I consider a good story to be one with little to no plot holes, interesting plot progression, and generally how much I enjoyed what was going on. Characters is even harder cause then you start thinking "ok am I rating the quality of the characters (how much development/progression was there) or how well the actors played the characters...but then you're just rating acting."

So, take Goon for example: I would rate it fairly high in Originality, slightly above average for Characters, Story, and Rewatch, and fairly high in Enjoyment (overall close to a 7-7.5 out of 10).

To me, Enjoyment is the best indicator for how well the movie did in respect to its genre.

  • Ya, I'd agree.. the others are a bit more cut and dry.
