Your ideas?

As we slowly expand the beta, we'd love to hear from our currently engaged users! We have some ideas about where we want to take things - but we'd love to know what things you might think would really take us to the "next level"?

Thanks in advance! -Elliot

  • I would love a way to organize movies by release date.. Not sure how feasible that is.. but it helps find newer stuff to get and makes me aware of things coming out soon.

We definitely need to do this, we're thinking about filtering by year in the browse movies page - is that what you had in mind?

  • Definitely. Also a sort function though if possible.. a lot of stuff comes out in a year.. I find myself checking rotten tomatoes for the new dvd releases and whats coming out etc, but they don't really have a good setup for that function.

This might take a bit longer, but I think we can have this kicking ass by the end of the week!

  • Include TV shows? They largely can use the same scale but it would be good to separate their rankings. But then if they could link to say oh you liked the Dark Knight, maybe you would like the Daredevil show on Netflix kinda thing. Obviously they are a different category completely but often go hand in hand. I know I watch more TV shows than movies.

I've thought about this too, and we can get the data, but it would be far down the line I think, still need to get everything about movies right :)

  • haha ya, i figured that much =) cool

Any thoughts on ability to communicate with other users? i.e. private messaging, or some kind of "wall" thing?

  • I've never been one to use private messaging anywhere so my opinion is pretty unwarranted there.

I think a place to comment on someones profile would be a solid addition (like flickchart). Honestly already a little ahead of the curve with each movie having a discussions list.

  • I think categories/folders on the discussion board would be good. And maybe a group chat for each crew? Haven't tried that function yet, but might be cool.

    • Nash

Can you expand on what you mean by categories / folders? Right now discussions are similar to reddit, where the front page has posts from all the actor / movie pages (i.e. like sub-reddits). Love the idea of group chat! We'll look into that asap

  • Ahh, I guess I didn't think it would be that drilled down. So essentially every movie/actor would be an individual subreddit.. I was thinking a bit more general.. eg. Action movies, hero movies, thriller, oscar bait, foreign etc. Cause if a lot of people post, the posts will fly off the main page quickly however not that many people might look at the Bornue Ultimatum page very frequently.. I guess that's something down the road though.

Right now we're using the reddit algorithm, so hopefully that one be an issue, but we might need a "rising" tab on the main page at some point

  • Maybe a 'Hot Right Now' section? that can include movies that have come out in the last month and/or movies that have been rated most in the last 2 weeks or something?

PS.. feel like I am making way too many suggestions, and you guys are knocking them all out haha. Very impressed.

I like this, as its a place to focus on new movies - any suggestions on where this might live?

  • At the top next to Recommendations? I imagine it would be a well traversed area for ratings on new movies and such, wouldn't be bad to have it front and center.

  • For the Top 100, I'd like to see the top 100 Animated or Hero movies, scifi, thriller etc etc.. aka would be cool if you could select categories for it.

I've just added sort by genre for the top 100, but I don't know how long it'll be before we have foreign animated - movies need to have at least 10 ratings for the top100 right now :\

  • Thats an awesome addition, nice =)

  • Not sure how TMDB sorts em, but if you could add a Rom Com and Superhero genre too, that would be neat. Only ones that seemed noticeably missing

  • Is there a way to space out replies?
Just gonna throw some random stuff out there.

I kind of wish there was some way to rate the visual appeal of a movie. I love the way Blade Runner and Her look, while i find Riddick and Snowpiercer a little bland.

Maybe be able to see which movies you've rated highest in each category instead of just a list of your favorite overall movies.

Trivia would be awesome. Mmmm points

I'd love to have a tiny spot on my profile for a favorite quote and/or favorite 5 movies.

As it is, I'm pretty happy to waste my time here already.

I like the idea of a favorite quote / 5 favorite movies (and a way to personalize a profile) - we'll spend some time on this

(I'm going to respond to these individually - for the sake of different threads) What if there were a separate scale for cinematic quality? Like only if you view a movie's page can you rate its visual appeal, effects, writing, acting etc. That way the data can still be used - but only people who really care will go out of their way to rate it. Do you think you would use something like that, or does it sound like too much effort on a consistent basis?

I too agree that this is heading in the right direction. Let the users who care about that level of detail have more data.

  • I think a separate scale is a good idea and allows for more information. Especially with the categories you listed. I'd find myself using it often. At the same time, something simpler like combining "Story" and "Characters" and adding a fifth option (Quality?) would work as well and may not seem as complicated.

I agree about seeing movies you rated by category - we need to take better advantage of the individual dimensions! :)

For trivia, this is definitely in the pipeline :)

Awesome feedback! I'll try to address each point.

What do you mean by space out replies? Like line breaks in the replies or better spacing in the discussion?

I do like your idea of rating the visuals of a movie as it's definitely more subjective (which is what we're aiming for) but it's tough to change the existing metrics for 2 reasons: 1) what would happen with the existing ratings?, and 2) it's really hard to represent a person's movie-going experience with any 5 set metrics, especially because people argue about which ones matter most when it comes to rating. That being said, what if we were to combine story and characters (some users suggested that) and add a fifth metric, such as "visuals"?

I assume you mean under "Favorite Movies" in the profile? Would filters/dropdown work or are you thinking more like how Netflix lays it out by category?

We're definitely going to do trivia of some kind (points galore!) and maybe hold weekly contests of some kind (with free swag woo!).

In regards to your favorite 5 movies: I guess our thought process is that your ratings should do the talking. Thoughts?

Thanks a ton for the feedback!

  • I meant line breaks. You seem to have fixed it.. i don't know how to do it though!

I agree that it would be difficult to change/add metrics. I love Nash's idea below. Combining story and character would work as well. I've had some trouble differentiating them. Both solid ideas and would enjoy either implementation.

I Think dropdowns would be perfect for something like picking categories. The netflix way can feel kind of clustered if i'm picturing it right (i use Hulu more lol).

Ratings should definitely do the talking, i was just trying to think of a couple ways to personalize the profile, and i try to be very objective when rating movies so my best rated aren't always my favorite.

  • Ah it seems to line break on it's own. It doesn't show up like that till i refresh the page apparently.

Yeah exactly. We're working on adding markdown support. That will be released very soon.

  • Maybe a Top 100 for actors/directors, i see how in browse if you select an actor you get their overall rating by that person, so im assuming there is a way to pull that in?

    • Nash

Hmm, so this would kind of like sorting in the browse page - if we use a filter for an actor or director, and then add a "sort by score" feature, that would achieve that. I've been trying to get a mobile version (light weight super minimal) done for this weekend, but still hoping to work on sorting tomorrow night.

  • Kinda, I meant ranking the actors themselves, you can see their graph when you sort them on the browse page but was thinking it would be fun to compare them, obviously purely for fun but thought it would be interesting to see which actors / directors end up being everyones true favorites.

    • Nash

We were planning on this initially, but it would need some serious development at this point - but I agree it should be in the future

    • You've got a checkbox for Hide Rated Movies in Browse. Could it be added to the Top100 pages as well? Easier to spot which ones I haven't rated yet but might have seen.

    • Also, is there a schedule or plan for adding more cast/director metadata to titles? I'm noticing Die Hard with a Vengeance on the top 100, but not the original Die Hard. It doesn't have its cast data yet, so people aren't naturally surfing to it. They can only vote for it if they search by title.

    • Nash

Hmm, I don't think we'll add it to top 100, but if we added "sort by shape/score" to the browse page, I think it'll accomplish the same thing. And yup - we're trying to fix that missing data issue as much as possible this weekend.

  • When you are in the browse movies portion, if you could uncheck movies you have already rated / marked as unseen / not interested.. or if the movies you have rated show a little rated symbol on the poster? That way its easier to use that to search an actor and see what you've already done.

  • Grr! somehow didnt notice that feature was already added haha.. ignore this completely since I can't delete the post heh

  • This rating system seems very arbitrary. I might have accidentally rated one movie I enjoy less more than another movie because I can't really see the exact spot.

Might be better to just let people assign a number from 1-4 or whatever for enjoyment, rewatchability, etc and then have the graph be automatically made based on those numbers.

    • Nash

The goal is for it to be arbitrary :) Its a fair point that you might be worried you rated one movie more or less than an another, but the goal we're shooting for is for the rating to be more visual / expressive, and less exact.

That said, it may be better to have the shape + a more normal rating...

  • It should have some sort of guideline or something when rating though like the middle line is around average or something. Might also be easier if the pentagon was a bit bigger by around 10-20%.
